BOTANICAL SCIENCE

From plant to preparation.

Water preparations

An infusion brings plant material into contact with water, commonly hot water. A decoction involves heating the material in water for a longer extraction step. Both recover water-soluble substances along with varying amounts of other material. Neither provides a fixed dose merely because the liquid has a strong colour.

Maceration & solvent extraction

In maceration, material remains in contact with a solvent while soluble compounds move into the liquid. Water-and-ethanol mixtures select a different chemical range from water alone. Manufacturers separate solids and may concentrate or dry the liquid under controlled conditions. An industrial solvent specification is not a home-use instruction. [1, 2]

Distillation & essential oils

Distillation separates volatile components through vaporisation and condensation. An essential oil contains a concentrated volatile fraction; it does not contain all the compounds found in an infusion or crude plant extract. Sunflower carrier oil is a pressed or extracted fixed oil, not an essential oil. The distinction matters when comparing the ingredients in Enki Hemp CBD Oil.

Yield is not strength

Extract yield (%) = 100 × dry extract mass ÷ starting dry plant mass A high yield can reflect sugars and other abundant constituents. It does not, by itself, show high levels of an active compound or a stronger clinical effect. The masses must use the same units and a clearly defined dry basis.

What does a 10:1 ratio mean?

A native drug-to-extract ratio of 10:1 describes ten mass units of starting botanical material for one unit of resulting native extract. It is not a tenfold clinical potency claim. Added carriers, solvent residues and the difference between native extract and finished product must be accounted for.

What good research reports

Look for a botanical voucher or authenticated identity, plant part, origin, solvent, extraction conditions, native ratio, marker analysis and contaminant checks. Reproducibility also depends on batch variation. CSIR’s facilities illustrate the role of controlled extraction, filtration, distillation and scale-up. [3] These are explanations of research and manufacturing concepts, not treatment instructions. A reproducible extract still needs evidence for safety and effectiveness in its intended use.
